We will be taking a short ride, yes, a short ride of only 83 miles, to explore this fascinating, living National Historical site that is still the full-time home of some of the Acoma Indians. KSU is from Bien Mur Valero Travel Center, across from Sandia Casino. After our arrival we will tour the Sky City as a group at 11:30a.m. at a discounted group rate of $19.00 each plus taxes. This includes the guided tour, camera permit, and admission to the Haak'u Museum. The tour is guided, but we can also wander independently within their guidelines. There will be local potters, jewelers, and craftsmen selling their wares to those who would like to take home handcrafted art. The small fruit pies are always a treat!
To ensure that each of us gets to spend as much, or as little, time as we would like touring, lunch will not be at any designated time. There is a café in the cultural center that serves traditional dishes from the Acoma people and seats about 40, there are picnic tables for those that would like to bring their own lunches, and there is a Dairy Queen nearby too!
Sky City Cultural Center and Haak'u Museum, rich in cultural architecture, serves as the reception center and museum for visitors to the Pueblo of Acoma. It is the gateway to Acoma “Sky City.” Acoma Pueblo, New Mexico is more than just a tourist destination. It is part of New Mexico's cultural heritage, as the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in North America and the 28th Historic Site designated by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Acoma history is also the story of the Southwest, from its initial role as the home to the Anaasazi people, to the thirteenth century founding of the Pueblo, which is still alive and well as a community and touchstone for Native Americans in the area and nationwide.
